What the hell?
This has been an exceedingly tough job hunt. I've been really getting down on myself. It's the peril of being a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Few want to hire you, even if they love ya once you get there. The latest downer... I had all but given up on one of the earliest positions I applied for, a tools developer for a games console group. Yesterday, I was thrilled to get an email programming quiz for it. And as is normally the case, I did great on that... well enough to get a phone interview today. The phone interview went well, and at the end, he asked me to fly to San Diego tomorrow (where the manager works). The interviewer said I should expect to get a call within a few minutes setting up the trip. Woohoo! I was riding high. Here was a job I'd been lusting after and knew I could kick-ass at. Which made it hurt all the more when he called back 30 minutes later to tell me he changed his mind. Too bad, so sad. Ugh. | | Monday, July 28th, 2008 | | 7:36 pm |

It's all dark and lonely here.
Just thought I'd give a quick update on my goings-on. Today is my last day in the office at Boston College (I will be working remotely for them for another month and a half). Ironically, everyone else is at a conference in NY, so I'm here all alone. Definitely my weirdest 'last day' ever. On Monday, Annie and I will start our drive cross-country, eventually arriving at our "new" home somewhere within the Bay Area (specifically, San Mateo/Palo Alto/Menlo Park... somewhere in there). I've accepted a job as a Senior Software Engineer with a smallish startup, SharpCast. And Annie will be working for a law firm specializing in helping out startups (yes, her firm does represent my new company... it's all been disclosed to the appropriate parties). Of course, she still has to pass the bar which she'll take at the end of the summer :) That's about it. For all you LA folks, I sincerely hope to make 'frequent' trips down there, so hopefully there will be a game-day or two I can crash! | | Thursday, August 16th, 2007 | | 10:42 am |
Happy Birthday, molly_drew!
Hear that? It's all the cheering and shouting going on in honor of your birthday! Or is it..... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! Bulldozer!Happy Birthdaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!Hope all is well out there. Oh, and by the way, the laminated map of Boston is still one of the best (most useful) gifts I've ever gotten :) | | Monday, July 24th, 2006 | | 2:42 am |

Better Blogging?
Does anyone know of a blogging site that generates a single RSS feed for all comments? My buddy Mike has it on his locally hosted site, but I don't want to deal with that crap :) | | 1:40 am |
A Blogging Start
I'm thinking about trying to blog semi-regularly. Maybe it'll help my writing skills? Maybe it'll help my state of mind. At the very least, it'll keep my friends up to date on my goings-on. We shall see :) So, what shall I start with? Recently I've rediscovered (thanks to Annie and her book-addiction) the public library system. Highlightes are American Gods by Neil Gaiman, the latest Sword of Truth novel (sigh... does any long-running SF/Fantasy series *not* peter out after the 3rd or 4th book? Harry Potter excluded), one of the later Callahan's books (see previous note... although these have stayed better than most), and Roger Zelazny's Isle of the Dead. I used to be a big Zelazny dork, but haven't read anything of his in a long time. And color me a big Spider Robinson fan... the man can weave a powerful tail (amazingly poor pun intended :) . What else? Seattle has been great. Wonderful, in fact. I've been meeting up regularly with some old Intel friends living up here, and playing *lots* of new board games (Alhambra - great, Goa - meh, El Grande - fantabulous, Caylus - undecided, and a few others). The food here absolutely rocks (just had Dixie's BBQ today... wowwowowowo... this might be might favorite BBQ place of all time.... those who know me know how serious this statement is). And living with Annie has been better than I could possibly have hoped. Oh, before I forget, i have bone to pick with some of the internet community. Recently a US Senator described the Internet as a series of tubes with information going through them. He presented this when arguing against Net Neutrality. Certain folks (Cory Doctorow, John Stewart, etc) have been ridiculing him endlessly for this. Now, I firmly support NN and think that the Senator Stevens argument was silly, but his Internet metaphor was nowhere near bad enough to warrant this sort of asinine nitpickery. In fact, when trying to describe the net's infrastructure to a layman, it's not bad at all. Stop lambasting the man for this just because you don't like his argument or politics in general! Cory is obviously a nut-case, but I expected more from Jon. Ahhhh... that felt better. i can see why folks like this blogging stuff :) I think that's good enough for a first post... later ya'll. Crappy week
I've been working crazy hours the past couple of months and it's really starting to get to me. I'm moving in a month and have done very little preparation, and *that's* getting to me. I've seen my girlfriend a total of about 20 hours in the past 2 months, and *that's* getting to me. Fortunately, the crunch mode was due to stop tonight, the move would soon be over, and for the first time in a while, I'd actually be living in the same city with Annie. But, when I get a call last Thursday morning that my grandfather, one of the most amazing people I've ever known, is in surgery, then later that day that he didn't make it... well, let's just say it didn't help. So, I spent this past weekend in Jersey. During the service, when my uncle got up and spoke and said that grandpa discovered his true calling when I was born (as I was the first of seven grandchildren), I pretty much lost it. Thankfully, I have a very supportive family (for the most part... one of them *did* lay a big, fat guilt trip on me the night of grandpa's funeral... bah), and we spent most of the weekend reminiscing and laughing at better times. Of course, the second day there, I somehow injured my foot... most likely a stress fracture. Not good when, like I said, I'm due to move in a month. Oh, and when I get back to the office this morning, I find out that the publish date has been pushed back a week and I'll likely be crunching for another week. And tomorrow's my birthday. And I miss him. Badly. | | Thursday, July 7th, 2005 | | 11:02 pm |

my first post...
thought I'd do one of these quiz dealies. | You scored as Utilitarianism. Your life is guided by the principles of Utilitarianism: You seek the greatest good for the greatest number.
“The said truth is that it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong.”
--Jeremy Bentham
“Whenever the general disposition of the people is such, that each individual regards those only of his interests which are selfish, and does not dwell on, or concern himself for, his share of the general interest, in such a state of things, good government is impossible.”
--John Stuart Mill
